RSR Results

Phase 1

During Phase 1, experts (n = 15) provided feedback about the RSR intervention. Experts were within one of three groups:

  • Sports medicine professionals (e.g., athletic trainers)

  • Licensed Mental Health Professionals (some also had their CMPC)

  • Retired collegiate student-athletes with lived experience of orthopedic injury

Overall, RSR was well-received by Phase 1 participants. They found the intervention to be well-organized and easy to follow. Based upon participant feedback, the program met our objective of providing a psychological intervention that was easy to access and perceived to be helpful for collegiate student-athletes experiencing orthopedic injury.

We are currently writing the manuscript describing RSR development and Phase 1 results. We will submit abstracts to present Phase 1 findings at conferences including but not limited to MAATA (accepted for 2025 annual meeting), CCSPA/Big Sky (submission under review), and AASP (submission for 2025 conference to be submitted in January 2025).

Phase 2

During Phase 2, collegiate student-athletes experiencing orthopedic injury who meet additional eligibility criteria (n = 96) will enroll in the study. Data regarding psychological readiness for RTS variables will be collected pre-intervention, post-intervention, and follow-up (3- and 6-months post-intervention).

Collegiate student-athletes from any institution in the United States are eligible to join the study.

Recruitment for Phase 2 is currently happening and will continue through December 2025! Contact us if you’d like to join the study or desire materials to share with athletes you serve.

CE Course for Professionals

We are creating a companion continuing education course for sports medicine and mental health professionals. Attendees will learn the RSR model and use it to build psychological readiness for return to sport with athletes that they serve. Additional background information will also be provided so participants can understand the psychology of sport injury and change mechanisms underpinning the RSR program.

Contact us if you’d like to be notified when this course goes live!
